Mineralogy of larimar

Chemical composition and structure:

  • Larimar is a rare variety of pectolite , a hydrated silicate of calcium and sodium (NaCa₂(Si₃O₂)₃(OH)) . Its distinctive blue color is due to the substitution of copper in its chemical structure.

  • Unlike many minerals, larimar has a fibrous structure , which contributes to its silky appearance and unique patterns . It forms in clusters or radial groupings of crystals.

Detailed physical properties:

  • Hardness: Larimar has a hardness of 4.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale . This variability is due to its composition and structure. It is therefore important to handle it with care to avoid scratches.

  • Density: Its density varies between 2.7 and 2.9 g/cm³ .

  • Color and Opacity: " Larimar is famous for its range of blue colors , from light blue to deep blue, sometimes with white or gray inclusions. Its opacity varies from translucent to opaque."

  • Breakage and cleavage: "It has an irregular breakage and perfect cleavage in one direction."

Geological formation of larimar

Larimar is formed in cavities in volcanic rocks, where hydrothermal solutions rich in silica and copper slowly crystallize. This unique process occurs exclusively in the Dominican Republic, in the Los Chupaderos region.

Varieties and distinctive features:

The quality of larimar is determined by the intensity of its blue coloring and the presence of wave-like patterns. The most prized pieces display an intense azure blue color with distinct patterns.
